101 EUROPE TRAVEL TIPS & MUST-KNOWS FOR FIRST TIMERS | Scams, Tourist Traps, What Not to Do & More!
Planning a trip to Europe? Here are essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, covering scams, tourist traps, and must-knows for first-time visitors.
Avoid peak travel times like mid-June to late August, when crowds and prices peak; consider spring, fall, or winter for a more pleasant visit, though Christmas markets are a magical exception if visited early in the season. Be mindful of European school holidays, which can also bring large crowds. To maximize your trip, focus on one or two countries rather than trying to visit many, which can lead to burnout and excessive travel time. Understand the Schengen Area, which allows border-free travel among 29 countries, but remember that the maximum stay is 90 days within any 180-day period; you can extend your stay by including non-Schengen countries like the UK or Ireland.
To protect your finances, consider using a travel credit card for rewards or a Wise card for spending at real exchange rates without hidden fees. Always notify your bank before traveling to prevent transaction blocks. Use mobile payment apps to tap and pay, which can be safer than handling cash or cards. When paying with cash, clearly state the bill’s denomination to avoid a “switcheroo” scam where a vendor pretends to drop a large bill and swaps it for a smaller one. Always count your change and be wary of slow counting or talkative cashiers who might take pictures of your card.
Be vigilant against common scams. Avoid unsolicited help from strangers, especially near ticket kiosks, as they may sell invalid tickets or steal your money. Be cautious of individuals offering “free” services like shoeshines or helping with luggage, as these can be preludes to theft. The “friendship bracelet” scam involves vendors tying a bracelet on your wrist and demanding payment, often under pressure. Similarly, fake petitions, often in English, are used to distract you while a pickpocket steals your belongings. Be wary of the “found ring” scam, where someone claims to have found a ring and tries to sell it at a high price. The “salesperson in distress” scam involves a well-dressed individual offering a gift and then asking for cash because their card isn’t working.
Beware of the “attractive flirt” scam, where a stranger invites you for a drink, only for the bill to be significantly higher than expected, sometimes with bouncers guarding the exits. Avoid being approached by “helpful” locals offering to assist with ATMs, as they may steal your PIN. Be cautious of “room inspectors” who claim to be checking your hotel room; always verify their identity with the front desk before allowing entry. Fake police officers in uniform may stop you to “inspect” your wallet, distracting you while they steal your money. In crowded places, be alert to distraction scams where one person engages you while an accomplice picks your pocket.
Avoid overpriced services, especially in tourist hotspots. Check prices before ordering at cafes on popular squares, as drinks can cost significantly more than expected. Be careful with fruit vendors; if you hand over a larger bill, they may try to give you extra items and refuse change. When buying fish by weight, be aware that prices can be very high per kilo. Never let a taxi driver use the meter; instead, use reputable companies like Uber, Bolt, or national taxi services. Avoid using ATMs in high-risk areas, particularly those from the EuroNet network, and research reliable ATM brands for your destination.
For safety, avoid going out alone at night in unfamiliar areas, especially after drinking alcohol. Instead, join evening tours like a dinner show or a night Segway tour to experience the city safely. If staying in hostels, connect with fellow travelers or ask staff for recommendations on safe evening activities. Always plan your return journey, ensuring reliable public transport or reputable taxi services are available late at night.
